New school year begins today! 10/1/13
Today is the first day of school for Haiti’s elementary school children. Although high schools, vocational schools and colleges opened on schedule the first week of September, the Ministry of Education announced in late August that opening day for primary schools throughout the country would be October 1. The reason for the delay was to allow parents more time to get their children ready for school.
At the ICDM school in Bayonnais, plans for “Back to School Week” went on as scheduled from August 29 to September 3. A team arrived from the US to outfit children with school uniforms, shoes and school supplies. Nurses were on duty in the new health clinic to administer vitamins, deworming medication and wellness checkups for the students.
School children happily engaged in campus cleanup, singing as they picked up papers and trash to make their campus more attractive. Daytime hours featured catch-up classes, choir rehearsals and tap dance lessons. Evenings featured educational films and popcorn, and a Back to School Festival with prizes and treats for everyone.
ICDM provides primary education to more than 600 children in the Bayonnais area. It is one of many non-profit organizations giving Haiti’s children a chance to learn and offering them hope for a better future. Even the local Voodoo priest sends his children to the ICDM school, knowing full well that they will learn the Gospel as well as reading, writing and arithmetic.
Please pray for God’s blessing and protection for both staff and students as they begin this new school year--and consider sponsoring a child at just $30 a month.
