ICDM: Christmas 2025

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
(2 Corinthians 8:9, NIV)
Dear friends of ICDM,

This passage from 2 Corinthians is really what Christmas is all about. Jesus left the halls of splendor to be born in a manger. He traded the music of heaven for the worship of poor shepherds and some outsiders from far away. During his life, he worked as a carpenter, hung out with the forgotten people of the world, and finally emptied himself on the cross for our salvation. He became poor so that we might become rich.

Have you ever reflected on this much? I know I have. Jesus became poor so that my family, living in the jungles of Haiti might have a new lease on life and build a legacy that would eventually become this ministry of ICDM. It was His grace that raised us up. Jesus left behind the riches of heaven, that I might know some of the richness of life here on earth and one day in heaven.

This Christmas, I invite you to think about how Jesus Christ has enriched your life. I want you to think about the talents he has bestowed upon you, the opportunities opened up to you, seemingly by chance but really by him working behind the scenes. I want you to think about blessings that have come your way, and if you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, the glory that will one day be revealed to you in heaven. All this comes from God’s grace (undeserved favor) that was won by Jesus’ birth, death and resurrection. Truly, he became poor so that we might become rich!

This gift causes me to worship and to commit myself to following in Jesus’ footsteps. I want to give up some of what I have in order to help those who have less. That is what motivated me to start ICDM over 35 years ago. This Christmas I invite you join me in this great endeavor.

My mind turns to Bayonnais, Haiti, and I see a child whose family is barely getting by. They have been forgotten by the world and could go on living their life in obscurity and want. How can I not share some of what I have learned in order to give that child a future through education? How can I not share some of what I have in order for them to have enough to eat?
Won’t you take some of what Jesus has given you to help me make a difference in this child’s life, and in the life of her friends? This Christmas, there are some very specific ways in which you can share.
  1. Feed some children. Every day our school in Bayonnais is in session we try to provide our students with a hot nutritious meal. For some of them it is the only meal of the day. We do this at the amazing rate of 75 cents per meal. Your gift of $75 could feed 100 children! A gift of $600 could feed the whole school of 800 students. Other amounts help. Even 75 cents feeds one child!
  2. Buy an animal for a family. The gift of an animal to succeed not only provides greater food security; it helps restore dignity to families as they learn to care for something that belongs to them. Suggested gifts are chickens ($12), goats ($100), pigs ($125), or cows ($500). Your gift can help change the direction of a family’s life!
  3. Sponsor a child. For $40 per month you can provide the tuition, books, and educational supplies for a child. Over the years our school has shaped doctors, diplomats, nurses, lawyers, pastors, more productive farmers. We continue to shape the future of Haiti amid the conflict it is now undergoing. Even with the turmoil Haiti has been experiencing, we have not missed one day of school! You may not be able to change the world, but you can change a life.

On that very first Christmas, Jesus gave up everything so that we might become rich. This Christmas, he calls us to give up something so that others might have a chance.

Blessings,
